Bible should not be reduced to Sound Bytes for Political Purposes

I am appalled at the blasphemy displayed by many Christians in this country.  They have chosen one sentence from the Old Testament in the Christian Bible to condemn gays and gay marriage.  Yet they ignore other sentences that call for stoning those who work on the Sabbath and children who do not obey their parents.  How do they justify their selective faith?  If they feel we all must obey the Old Testament to the letter then they are all falling way short.  If it is their intent to make the Bible into civil law they do not understand the intent of the founding fathers of this nation, nor the intent of Jesus.

In this matter, I believe that they are not acting according to God’s wishes, and certainly not according to Jesus’ teaching.  The New Testament calls for turning the other cheek, and loving thy neighbor.  The New Testament tells us judge not others lest we be judged ourselves.

If they are going to use the Bible to justify their bigotry they should at least be consistent and obey the entire Bible, not just the parts that support their fear and ignorance.  To pick and choose selected sound bytes from the Bible to make law is wrong on so many fronts; politically, personally and religiously.

They need to pray for guidance on this topic, and hopefully they will gain enlightenment enough to understand that people who use that one sentence from the Old Testament are working against God’s will on this topic.
