The Published Works of Steve McGourty
This page points to articles I have written that have been bought and published over the years. If you ever wondered just how really geekie I am, this page shows you what I do for fun!
Work Related:
I have written many things in my life, but this is the first and so far only paper relating to my chosen field of work that has actually gotten published.
Network Traffic Projection: This article explains the mathematical method used to project the Boeing Company's computer network traffic, that I developed. It was published in the August 2004 issue of Measure It! The Computing Management Group's monthly magazine dedicated to network management issues. It took several years to find someone to publish this story as the editors of the other magazines I approached kept saying the article was too technical. It was probably the math that scared them, but non-techies have read the article and say they can follow the math (it's only algebra). You can skim over the formula's and still get the gist of the method, it uses both past performance and headcount to project future network loads. This method projected the Boeing Enterprise traffic to within one percent of actual for 2005. Boeing choose not to patent this very accurate and unique method.
(Years ago I wrote a white paper on how much bandwidth network management uses to monitor the network. It went into bit level accounting of all NM traffic generated and proved that it typically uses less then 1% of the available bandwidth. Unfortunately that paper has not been cleared for publication outside of the company so it can not be linked to this site. Since this paper was very Boeing specific it was not outside publication worthy, however it is still available on the internal Boeing web.)
Hobby Related:
I have collected stamps on and off since I was eight. In my adulthood I have written several articles about stamp related topics that interest me including the two presented here.
Navy Postal Clerks: This article is a feel good history and overview of the Navy rate for Postal Clerks. It was published in a weekly publication called Linn's Stamp News in 2005. I was told by one of folks who helped with background information for the story that the Navy now gives a copy of this story to every Postal Clerk trainee.
Cinderella Wine Label's: This article will soon be printed in another stamp publication called Scott's Stamp Monthly. It describes some wine labels that look like stamps (I saw a bottle of the Benton-Lane Pinot Noir with the stamp like label and it peaked my interest). In stamp collecting terms, anything that looks like a stamp but isn't a stamp is called a 'Cinderella'.
Years ago I wrote several articles about stamp collection data bases that got published in the American Philatelist. They are so old that I do not have electronic copies of them.
