SCHOOL EDITORIAL, March 2000, Everett Hearld

Herald views are outrageous

l was appalled at The Herald's editorial on March 5 ("Crucial school votes take place March 14). The Herald's editorial staff laughingly dismisses the responsibility of the Legislature under the Washington constitution to provide funding for basic education while promoting that voters should approve additional levies to fund basic requirements for local schools. Where is The Herald's outrage at the Legislature's failure to fulfill its obligations under the constitution? Why isn't The Herald attacking those elected officials that fail to provide adequate funding for basic education? In one of the highest taxed states in the country why would The Herald be asking for the citizens to furnish additional funding simply because the Legislature won't do what's required by the constitution? Instead The Herald jokes about this failure of the Legislature with "wink, wink" comments and appeals to voters to throw more good money after bad.
